We have finished the renovation to our beautiful family cottage at Pennant Brook (West Pennant, Nova Scotia - right on Pennant Cove with a wee private beach at low tide).
We will offer the cottage to friends and friends-of-friends during times when our immediate family are not using it.
Inside we have 2 dedicated bedrooms (queen in the master and double bed plus twin size bunk beds in the second bedroom) and a fully insulated sunroom which can be converted into a private third bedroom with a “European double” (3/4) day bed, a propane fireplace and electric heat. There is a fold out Ikea sofa (3/4 size as well) in the living room and a double futon we can move into the living room or sunroom for large families.
The main living room/kitchen space is open and roomy - dining room table for 8 and counter seats for 8 (with 4 extra stools just in case). The kitchen has granite counters, 3 sinks, gas range, dishwasher, large fridge, wine fridge and a large Webber gas grill just outside the patio doors. In the living room are lots of comfy chairs as well as a desk for working or playing games. We have a great selection of reading material (fiction and non-fiction), games and puzzles (as well as art supplies for kids). Wi-fi but no T.V. 🙂 Sonos music system with built in speakers for streaming music and podcasts. Both living room and kitchen have stunning views out Pennant Cove to the North Atlantic. Ducks of all sorts, Kingfishers, Osprey, Bald Eagles and Herons are regular visitors depending on the season. The mouth of Pennant Brook spilling into the Cove is your view from the sunroom and the side window in the living room.
We have a full size washer and dryer, heated slate floors in the bathroom and rain shower head in the shower.
The bedrooms have electric heat. The main space is heated (cooled) with a heat pump. There are propane stoves in the living room and sunroom.
The art collection (inside and outside the cottage) includes work by Nova Scotia artists and crafts people as well as art from Peru, Bhutan, Ecuador, Africa and The Czech Republic.
Pennant Brook is part of a 320 acre area protected by the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. It starts in the barrens of the Terence Bay Provincial Wilderness Area (where we hike in summer and winter) and empties into Pennant Cove beside our cottage. The brook has a lovely swimming hole and walking trail. Check out West Pennant on Google Earth and you’ll see 2 pictures of the Brook. Our cottage has over 1000 sq feet of deck so we can enjoy the sun all day. We have 2 canoes for paddling around the cove in the afternoon. In the evening we have bonfires in our fire pit overlooking Pennant Cove.
There are a number of excellent hiking and walking trails within a 5 minute drive (15 minute walk) of our cottage. Crystal Crescent Beach, one of Nova Scotia’s finest white sand beaches, is a 5 minute drive away (as is the Sambro corner store/liquor store/take out with excellent fish and chips). We have lots of beach towels and blankets! Sambro is a thriving fishing community with a fascinating public wharf. Arrangements can often be made to visit the Sambro Lighthouse - the oldest surviving lighthouse in North America - built during the Seven Years’ War in 1758. The Sambro fleet is second to none in the lobster, halibut, haddock, tuna and swordfish fisheries. We get fish in season from the local fish plant.
